The Arizona Coyotes are based in the sparsely green in Glendale, Arizona. The team is a member of the Pacific Division of the National Hockey League (NHL) with their home games played at the Gila River Arena. In June of 2015, the Glendale City Council voted for ending the their lease agreement with the team but later it was announced that the team and the city council reached a deal. So the Arizona Coyotes will continue to stay in Glendale for another two seasons. The Arizona Coyotes started out as the Winnipeg Jets of the WHA. Once the WHA closed down, this was one of the four franchises that the NHL was tasked with absorbing by granting them membership back in 1979. The Jets then moved to Phoenix in 1996 and were renamed the Phoenix Coyotes. Later in 2009 the NHL took possession of the Coyotes after Jerry Moyes declared bankruptcy and turned the team over to the league. The Arizona Coyotes are by no means the best team with zero Stanley Cup, Presidents’ Trophies or conference championships. The team has only been able to win the 2011-2012 Division Championship. The Coyotes share a division with the Ducks, Flames, Oilers, Kings, Sharks and Canucks.
