CBS streaming service ‘All Access’ just stepped up into the big time.
Startrek.com announced today that Star Trek is going to get a 2017 reboot, and it’s going to premiere on CBS’s proprietary streaming service ‘All Access’ alongside traditional CBS broadcasts. But the push here with the new series will be to get folks engaging with the CBS streaming app in an effort to keep folks within the CBS ecosystem.
The network will release the series through traditional television, but the streaming app is going to be the key release here. From the press release:
“The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.
The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.”
This is a big move into the future of television distribution, especially for a network traditionally aimed at an older but extremely profitable demographic of television watchers. Bringing a Star Trek reboot to the CBS All Access app shows that CBS wants to be taken seriously with the growth of this new streaming option for future shows.
“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”
Individual network streams have traditionally taken a back seat to more robust offerings such as Netflix and Hulu. But moving into the future, it certainly seems likely that the streaming video online industry will fragment even further than it is as more and more content owners hope to profit from this growing form of entertainment consumption.
The new Star Trek is set to premiere in 2017, but we certainly expect dozens of updates in the coming months following this initial announcement.
