Netfllix original ‘Marco Polo’ was supposed to be a massive success, but the first season failed to find the massive critical and commercial acclaim that the show might have hoped for. Big budgets, incredible settings, and beautiful direction couldn’t ultimately make up for the plot’s lack of focus and somewhat over-the-top nature of the first season.
But Netflix spent a lot of money to bring ‘Marco Polo’ to the service, and the plan was to have a second season so here we are. Netflix has released the second season trailer as well as the premiere date for one of the service’s most expensive shows.
From Netflix: In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, Marco Polo is based on the famed explorer’s adventures in Kublai Khan’s court in 13th Century China, and the dark and tempestuous battle for the expanding Mongol empire.
John Fusco, who wrote the Academy-Award nominated feature Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is executive producer and showrunner along with Dan Minahan, whose previous work includes Homeland and Game of Thrones, with Patrick Macmanus, Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein and Elizabeth Sarnoff as executive producers.
The second season of ‘Marco Polo’ will premiere on Netflix July 1st.
