Netflix continues to expand their content offering into new genres seemingly on a monthly basis.
Today, the service announced an order for young adult series ’13 Reasons Why’ bringing the series to Netflix as an exclusive US release. Selena Gomez is the executive producer behind the series, but according to Deadline, will not be starring in the show.
’13 Reasons Why’ is based on a novel of the same name that has seen massive success, including having hit the number one spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list. The novel follows a package sent from a young student who had taken her own life. In the package, a series of tapes that are to be passed from student to student, with each one explaining the reasons she had committed suicide.
The novel has received critical acclaim within its genre, which certainly drove initial interest in turning it into a television series. No word as to what interest was like from other networks or streaming services, but due to the popularity of the novel, we can certainly assume it was high.
