Everyone is Giving the Netflix Ratings System a Thumbs Down

Anyone who has logged into Netflix this month probably noticed a different rating system.

Instead of the standard five-start rating that subscribers have been used to over the past decade, everyone is now seeing a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down.’

People generally hate change, especially in well-respected user experience, and sometimes these design adjustments can just take a while to get used to. But functionally speaking, a lot of people are complaining about how limiting this new system is to their tastes.

While a lot of people are missing that the ‘thumbs up’ and ‘thumbs down’ functionality is actually a way to build a more consistent homepage library. Think of it similar to Pandora, where the thumbs up and down tells Netflix how to better display future titles.

Now that’s a pretty promising sign, though, that Netflix is willing to test things out a bit here. Let them know if you have the change!
